10 MoUs to secure take-off of Western Sydney Aerotropolis

The NSW Government has signed its 10th major agreement to attract investment to the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, keeping its promise to create 200,000 jobs on track.

As reported, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian committed to deliver 10 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in 2018 and has now delivered with the final commitment.

The last commitment entails developing a Space Industry Hub from 18 NSW space companies, research and education institutions, as well as the CSIRO, which is a major coup for the state.

Although the majority of Australia’s space industry is already based in NSW, the last MoU will work to grow the industry further.

It means the NSW Government has agreements that represent millions of dollars of investment in NSW to create new jobs, industry and underpin the new Western Sydney Parkland City.

This Aerotropolis will give the people in Western Sydney access to the best jobs, education opportunities and lifestyle.

The Minister for Western Sydney explained that the Aerotropolis will be a vibrant hub for high-skill jobs, education and major industries like advanced manufacturing, aerospace, defence and agribusiness.

Crucial investments are being attracted to guarantee that it will provide the best jobs and opportunities as well as improve the quality of life for businesses, families and communities right across Western Sydney.

The NSW Government will continue to attract jobs and investment to the Aerotropolis in 2019 by securing more deals with global and local companies.

A total of 10 MoUs were signed to build the Aerotropolis. These are:

  • Global defence and aerospace company Northrop Grumman announced plans for A$ 50 million investment in an advanced defence electronics maintenance and sustainment centre in May 2017.
  • Vice chancellors from the University of Newcastle, University of NSW and University of Wollongong (the NUW Alliance), and Western Sydney University signed on to deliver a world-class higher education institution in September 2018.
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries signed to promote investment opportunities in transport, logistics, healthcare, education and renewable energy as well as other commercial, residential and community developments in October 2018.
  • The Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group signed an agreement, similar to Mitsubishi’s, promoting investment opportunities in transport, logistics, healthcare, education and renewable energy as well as other commercial, residential and community developments in October 2018.
  • Sydney Markets signed on to establish a presence in the Aerotropolis to take advantage of agri-business, freight and logistics opportunities that will develop over the next decade and beyond in November 2018.
  • Hitachi offered its expertise in sectors ranging from energy, construction, water and railway systems to defence, digital systems and health technology in November 2018.
  • One of Australia’s leading medicine manufacturers, Vitex Pharmaceuticals, announced plans to invest an initial A$ 10 million in a 10,000 square metre state-of-the-art pharmaceutical training and research facility, which would support about 100 jobs and train up to 200 students at a time in November 2018.
  • Japan’s Urban Renaissance Agency signed on to offer its expertise to support development of the Aerotropolis and a world class urban environment for the Western Parkland City in November 2018.
  • The University of Sydney signed on for a global agricultural science hub in December 2018.
  • 18 NSW space companies and supporting organisations signed on to develop a ‘Space Industry Hub’ in Sydney that will grow space companies for later relocation to the Aerotropolis in December 2018.
