Workshop Aims to Prepare IT Specialists on Automated Information System

Workshop for IT Specialists on Automated Information System

The personnel of Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Field Office XIII participated in a recent Active Directory Domain Services Training-Workshop.

Background

According to a recent press release, the activity is in line with the Bureau’s vision of a fully automated information system by 2023.

Phase 1 of the planned improvement of the Bureau’s network had been completed already with the deployment of the infrastructure as well as the development of the network.

The central and regional offices have been furnished with the equipment, which includes the set-up of servers, network paraphernalia, and other hardware related to the endeavour.

The training workshop aimed to prepare the participants for Phase II of the project. The agenda includes the implementation of the Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS).

The AD DS serves as the foundation for distributed networks built on Windows server operating systems, which use servers as domain controllers.

It provides a secure, structured and hierarchical data storage for objects in a network such as users, computers, printers, and services.

Having this service in place will allow administrators to easily manage and store information about resources from a network as well as application data in a distributed database.

Moreover, it will make assigning and enforcing policies for all computers, together with installing or updating software, much easier.

About the Initiative

During the workshop, the participants, particularly the newly-hired IT Specialists, went through a refresher and review of the AD DS training, which was previously conducted in 2018.

As part of the training, they also prepared a domain user master list, which included user information and official email accounts.

At the end of the event, the participants were able to accomplish all the requirements for AD DS. They covered policies, organisational unit master list and an inventory of software licenses and subscriptions.

In addition, a timeline on the AD DS deployment must be finalised, which will be presented to the management.

Preparing for the Future Via Training Initiatives

Training employees is important because it enhances their skills, capabilities, and knowledge in doing a specific task.

It improves the efficiency and productivity of the employees. Outcomes include less wastage of time, money and resources.

Countries across the globe recognise the need to continually train people, particularly with the ever-changing world of technology. OpenGov Asia reported on some of these initiatives.

In Singapore, for instance, there will be a renewal of the Professional Conversion Programme (PCP) for Salesforce Platform Professionals, for three years until 2023.

More mid-career professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) will highly benefit from this renewal as it will allow them to transition further into the latest tech roles.

This programme is a partnership between Workforce Singapore (WSG), software firm Salesforce and trade association SGTech.

An estimated 150 PMETs, as well as mid-career switches, are expected to benefit from this programme.

With the uptake of these new skills, graduates of this programme can expect to transition to roles or switch careers to industries such as finance, healthcare and technology.

Meanwhile, the Human Resource Research and Development Agency of Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Information recently held a Smart City Technical Training for selected State Civil Apparatus, who came from 6 districts, 2 cities and one ministry.

The goal of the training was to support the implementation of the Movement Towards 100 Smart Cities in Indonesia.

The trainees were given the opportunity to learn that a smart city not only deals with implementing technology but also thinks of smart ways to manage a city.
