Smart Nation is a whole-of-nation journey. Advances in digital technology have opened new possibilities to enhance the way we live, work, play, and interact.

Singapore continuous journey towards a Smart Nation to support better living, stronger communities, and create more opportunities, for all.

An initiative, coordinated by the Smart Nation and Digital Government Office in the Prime Minister's Office, supported by other government agencies.

To have significant impact on the citizen and society, 5 Key Domains have been identified:

qlik 1

The smart nation platform will provide access to greater and meaningful information, enabling governments and citizens to make better decisions related to transport, health, and other services. It also can offer access to rich-data and innovative products and ideas, leading to the creation of solutions that can better society.

The Growing Volume of Big Data

There’s an explosion in the volume of data in today’s increasingly digitised, interconnected world. Making use of this data through analytics is critical if we want to realise the true potential of technology in transforming businesses, governments and ultimately, the lives of people. In this context, it sits at the very heart of the Smart Nation initiative.

Better data insights can further help businesses improve their operations.

CLEVER Analysis in Big Data Is Transforming the Provision of Public Services

  • Data science in public policy is about enabling evidence-based decision making in government
  • Besides applying data science to inform policy making and to support day-to-day operational decisions, another area that government is working on is the development of smart, data-driven applications to enhance or deliver more customised experiences for citizens

Importance of Data Analytics in the Public Sector

Singapore has clearly led the Smart City evolution and dissemination of information.

In the public sector, a great deal of the examples involves the population. It is about taking what exists from a complex set of analytics to comprehend what is happening within a city or organisation and making the key elements available to the electorate.

The data which is anonymised and analysed, provide insights that will contribute towards forming solutions that can help improve the lives of citizens.

Challenges

qlik 4

Data security – people simply will not share if data is not protected. Government as an enabler for data available to be in a trusted, consistent environment.

To be more decisioncentric, with less focus on reporting, using analytics to derive intelligent conclusions.

E.g. Use of Analytics enables LTA to generate a platform crowd heatmap in real time using data. LTA can then monitor the platform crowd so they know how crowded the stations are and can inject trains where necessary.

Combining Machine Learning and similar technologies to enrich the analytical experience for a government user.

The revamped portal, data.gov.sg. makes the data available more relevant and understandable for the public, through data visualisations and data narratives. More of this needs to come.

The Ability to Govern Data, wherever it resides.

Smart Nation initiative includes plans for an operating system that allows all public agencies to connect to, so essential sensor data can be anonymised, secured, managed, and shared.
