While Singapore is a world leader in digital government services
due to a sustained focus and investment in ICT across a range of public
services, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong sees much more work to be done if
Government’s vision of a truly transformed public sector is to be realised.
The Prime Minister's Office recently announced
structural changes to help achieve these goals. First, the Government Technology Agency
(GovTech) will move from under the Ministry of Communications and
Information to report directly to the Prime Minister’s Office. In addition, a new Smart Nation and Digital Government Group (SNDGO), overseen
by a ministerial committee chaired by Deputy Prime
Minister Teo Chee Hean, has also been formed. Collectively,
the SNDGO and GovTech will form the Smart Nation and
Digital Government Group (SNDGG) in the Prime Minister’s Office, adding a
strong focus on the priorities of Government.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong recognises
the achievements of the public sector in digital transformation and seeks to
accelerate these efforts. This move to bring various agencies and units dealing
with technology under PMO is evidence of his commitment to faster, better results
in Singapore's push to be a Smart Nation.
