According to recent data, Thailand became a leader in 5G connectivity. Furthermore, they also offered a stable 5G network for approximately 28.7% of users’ online activity. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Thailand’s technological landscape, which wants to grow economically.
Investors are increasingly interested in nations with stable telecommunication infrastructure, recognising online communication is crucial for business sustainability. Consequently, Thailand’s investment in 5G connectivity is setting a benchmark for the nation’s future development.
The utilisation of 5G technology on a global scale signifies that Thailand is embarking on a transformative journey to reshape its digital landscape, making it more robust, dynamic, and adaptive to the evolving needs of the modern world. In light of this, Thailand has embarked on their Thai 4.0 strategy for confronting digital transformation.
To align this vision and mission, Mr Phuchapong Nod Thaisong, Secretary-General of the National Digital Economy and Society Committee, led an event to unveil draft measures to promote 5G technology investment and utilisation. He was joined by Mr Teerawut Thongphak, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Digital Economy and Society Committee, and Ms Wansiri Puasiri, Director of the Digital Policy Development Centre for Economy and Society at the National Digital Economy and Society Commission (NDEC), along with representatives from government agencies and the private sector.
Mr Phuchapong Nodthaisong highlighted the NDEC’s project to formulate measures for investing and using 5G technology. These measures were developed by studying national strategies, policies, foreign practices, legal frameworks, and guidelines. Three key measures have been proposed: those supporting smart city development, tax incentives, and methods for accessing funding sources.
These measures encourage sectors to actively invest and utilise 5G technology, fostering a supportive ecosystem that can harness 5G to further Thailand’s economy and society.
To maximise the potential of digital technology across all economic and social sectors in Thailand, the NDEC initiated an action plan for promoting 5G technology in the past year. Phase 2 of this plan (2023-2027) is under development, consisting of four key strategies:
- Advancing 5G network performance
- Driving the digital economy through 5G
- Creating a quality society with 5G
- Preparing an ecosystem for 5G utilisation
This aligns with the National Policy and Plan for Digital Development for the Economy and Society 2018-2037, focusing on achieving specific goals such as the digital economy’s contribution to GDP, global digital competitiveness, and digital literacy among the Thai population by 2027.
Mr Puchphong believes that 5G technology has proven to be a game-changer by enabling high-speed, low-latency connections essential for accessing cloud-based content seamlessly.
“We are aiming to transform Thailand into a smart city,” Mr. Phuchapong stressed. Furthermore, three critical strategies will be for accelerating the development of Smart Cities in Thailand. These strategies encompass preparing municipal data, establishing a City Data Platform, and designing a National City Data Platform to ensure secure data linkage and interchange. These platforms prioritise protecting personal information and cater to the data needs of government, private sector, and local entities.
Hence, establishing robust and high-speed connectivity in Thailand is of utmost importance. It will enable the facilitating of seamless operations and swift data exchanges.
