Cyber Scouts: Thailand’s Response to Online Threats

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Cybersecurity is a significant concern in Thailand due to the country’s rapid digitalisation and the rise in cyber threats. The enactment of the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) in 2020 has underscored the importance of protecting personal data, leading to increased focus and investment in cybersecurity measures. Thailand has also actively engaged with international partners to enhance its cybersecurity capabilities and promote information sharing.

Organisations are encouraged to invest in training programmes, forge partnerships with educational institutions, and promote knowledge-sharing initiatives to address the shortage of cybersecurity professionals. It is essential to raise awareness about cybersecurity risks among large SMEs and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through public campaigns, workshops, and educational efforts. Moreover, leveraging emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning can offer a competitive edge by enabling the development of innovative cybersecurity solutions.

The National Digital Economy and Society Committee and UNICEF Thailand have co-chaired the opening ceremony for the “Training of Cyber Scouts to be Digital Volunteers” project. This initiative aims to support and promote Cyber Scouts in safeguarding children and youth from online dangers. Over 100 teachers and students attended the event at True Digital Park in Bangkok.

Mr Phuchapong Nodthaisong, Secretary-General of the National Digital Economy and Society Committee, highlighted the project’s goal of creating awareness among Cyber Scouts regarding the creative use of information and communication technology (ICT) in the online world.

The project also aims to establish an online social group that upholds ethics and morality, serving as role models for promoting the appropriate use of the internet. Additionally, Cyber Scouts will work together to monitor and combat online dangers that threaten children, youth, and society.

The initiative received funding from UNICEF Thailand, enabling teachers, children, and youth to join the Cyber Scout network and serve as digital volunteers. These volunteers will be crucial in contacting and coordinating with volunteer networks, creating a safer online environment. The project’s primary objective is to assess the current usage of ICT among youth, identify challenges they face online, and promote the creative and responsible use of technology.

The training provided participants with knowledge and activities to enhance their understanding of online safety and promote positive online behaviours. By instilling a sense of ethics and morality in Cyber Scouts, the project seeks to empower them to protect themselves and others from online dangers.

Through this initiative, Thailand aims to create a solid social network of Cyber Scouts who will act as watchdogs, identifying and addressing behaviours that threaten the well-being of children, youth, and society. In an era dominated by digital technology, fostering responsible and ethical online behaviour is crucial for ensuring the prosperity and security of the country.

In the future, Thailand is likely to continue facing cybersecurity challenges as its digital economy expands. This will require ongoing efforts to strengthen cybersecurity capabilities, including collaboration with international partners, investment in training programmes, and raising awareness among businesses and the public about cybersecurity risks.

The rapid advancement of technology will necessitate the continuous adaptation of cybersecurity strategies. Emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G networks will bring new security challenges that must be addressed proactively.

Cybersecurity is a critical issue for Thailand as it digitises its economy. By investing in cybersecurity measures, fostering collaboration, and promoting awareness, Thailand can enhance its cybersecurity resilience and protect its citizens from online threats.
