Indonesia has taken a monumental step forward in its digital infrastructure with the inauguration of the Indonesia Digital Testing House (IDTH), heralded as the largest facility of its kind in Southeast Asia. Led by Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi, the IDTH represents a significant advancement in digital device certification and innovation, positioning Indonesia at the forefront of technological progress in the region.

Formerly known as the Telecommunication Device Testing Center (BBPPT), the newly revamped IDTH in Depok, West Java, stands as a testament to Indonesia’s commitment to fostering digital safety, security, and innovation. Minister Setiadi emphasised the transformative potential of the IDTH, equipped with state-of-the-art international-level facilities, to ensure the safety and reliability of telecommunication devices used by millions of Indonesians.

At the heart of the IDTH’s mission is the assurance of seamless access to safe and standardised telecommunication devices for individuals, businesses, and government agencies across Indonesia. Through rigorous testing procedures, the IDTH aims to uphold international standards for exported and imported devices while promoting interoperability and protecting against interference among digital devices.

Minister Setiadi underscored the IDTH’s expanded capacity to test a wide array of digital devices, including laptops, smartphones, Bluetooth devices, access points, digital televisions, handheld transceivers (HT), and radars. This enhanced testing capability reflects Indonesia’s dedication to keeping pace with technological advancements and ensuring the integrity of its digital ecosystem.

The IDTH is the epitome of innovation, fostering collaboration with universities to build human resource capacity and promote technological excellence. Minister Setiadi highlighted the IDTH’s role as a centre of excellence for digital devices, offering opportunities for practitioners, experts, and researchers to drive technological innovation and elevate Indonesia’s competitiveness on the global stage.

The inauguration of the IDTH marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s digital transformation journey, aligning with the country’s broader vision for digital advancement and economic growth. President Joko Widodo lauded the IDTH as a critical component of Indonesia’s digital infrastructure, emphasising its substantial budget and advanced equipment, which enable comprehensive testing of digital devices to ensure their safety and reliability.

Looking ahead, Minister Setiadi expressed optimism about the IDTH’s future role in accelerating Indonesia’s digital transformation agenda. With projections indicating a substantial increase in testing capacity – from 644 features in 2023 to 1,600 features in 2024 and up to 5,000 features annually by 2025-2026 – the IDTH is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping Indonesia’s digital landscape for years to come.

In addition to its core function as a testing centre, the IDTH is poised to become a hub for technological innovation, fostering collaboration among industry players, researchers, and experts to drive advancements in digital technology. Minister Setiadi emphasised the importance of collaboration in realising Indonesia’s vision for digital excellence, urging stakeholders to work together to harness the full potential of the IDTH and propel Indonesia towards a prosperous digital future.

OpenGov Asia reported that Minister Setiadi had confirmed that the Indonesia Digital Testing House (IDTH) would collaborate with universities to enhance telecommunications device quality. IDTH would also partner with independent researchers and introduce cutting-edge testing equipment, including SAR devices, at its new facility in Tapos, Depok, West Java.

As Indonesia charts its course towards becoming a digital powerhouse in Southeast Asia, the inauguration of the IDTH stands as a testament to the country’s unwavering commitment to digital innovation, safety, and security. With the IDTH at the forefront of Indonesia’s digital transformation, the nation is poised to seize new opportunities, drive economic growth, and enhance the lives of millions through the power of technology.
