Indonesia’s Tech-Driven Marine Conservation Efforts

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Since the World Water Forum (WWF) was held in Indonesia, awareness of marine and health issues in several regions of Indonesia has been increasing. One example is the Department of Control and Supervision of the Quality of Marine and Fisheries Products (BPPMHKP) of the Bangka Belitung Islands, which has optimised its information services through the ‘PIKAT SAJA’ feature in the Sistematik Akuntabel Objektif Legitimate Inovatif (Saolin) application. This feature allows the public to report any issues regarding marine and fisheries that will be promptly addressed.

PIKAT SAJA is an additional innovative feature introduced in the Saolin application by BPPMHKP Babel a year ago. Dedy Arief Hendriyanto, the Head of BPPMHKP Babel, explained that the PIKAT SAJA feature, which can be accessed online, is a commitment of BPPMHKP to quickly respond to questions or complaints from the public regarding the marine and fisheries sector in that area.

“We have created a new feature, called PIKAT SAJA, which is in the Saolin application. PIKAT SAJA is a platform for the public to report information about fisheries and marine issues that will be promptly addressed within a maximum of 50 minutes. Reports and information must be able to provide solutions for the public, ensuring that our services remain at a maximum level,” he said.

Through PIKAT SAJA, the public can inquire about and report any issues related to the supervision and control of fishery product quality. “For example, if there is a report of someone getting sick or vomiting after consuming fish, we will immediately investigate the cause, whether it is due to formalin poisoning or other causes,” he added.

With this innovation, he envisions that the people of Babel can be more active in controlling and supervising the quality of marine and fisheries products so that the results of marine and fisheries in Babel can compete with other regions.

In the future, BPPMHKP Babel aims to enhance its services further and expand the reach of the PIKAT SAJA feature to engage more communities in monitoring and improving marine and fisheries quality. This includes conducting more outreach programmes and educational campaigns to raise awareness about sustainable practices in fishing and marine conservation.

Additionally, BPPMHKP Babel plans to collaborate with other relevant agencies and organisations to gather more comprehensive data and insights into marine and fisheries issues. This will help develop more effective policies and strategies to address challenges such as overfishing, pollution, and climate change’s impacts on marine ecosystems.

Indonesia is renowned for its rich maritime resources, which are a significant part of its economy and identity. The country’s vast marine area, with over 5.8 million square kilometres and a coastline of approximately 81,000 kilometres, is home to a diverse array of marine life, including coral reefs that are a major productive and ecological asset. This natural wealth is crucial for fisheries, tourism, and natural heritage protection. Still, it also faces challenges such as deforestation, wildlife trade, pollution, and overfishing, which can have devastating impacts on the environment and the economy.

By harnessing technology and fostering collaboration, BPPMHKP Babel is committed to ensuring the sustainable management of marine and fisheries resources in the Bangka Belitung Islands, ultimately contributing to the overall well-being and prosperity of the local communities dependent on these resources.
